Don't leave someone hanging after they help you out, wondering about the outcome. It's rude, it looks bad, and it actually has the potential to create negative consequences.

"Thank you" sometimes suffices.
Letting the other know how it went adds some more - if it resulted to a good thing, then thank some more. If not, say thanks anyway - and don't blame them. Suggest ways to improve next time - without sounding like "I told you so".
